Kathy Hochul of New York focused on looking forward for solutions to worldwide crises like global warming and a lack of affordable housing. But as she visited County Kerry, Ireland, Ms. Hochul paused to linger in the past. They would later meet in Chicago, where they married before moving to Buffalo, the governor’s hometown, to work at the steel mill there. Every so often, as money and time allowed, the family would make the trip back to the Maharees, a peninsula that juts off Ireland’s west coast and contains three small towns: Fahamore, Kilshannig and Candeehy. On Sunday, around 100 local residents, county council members and relatives gathered in Spillane’s Bar in Fahamore for a civic reception to honor Ms. Hochul.

Read on for some of the things that surprised me when I first got to Ireland. I thought a lot of the phrases in Ireland would be similar to what I heard in the UK. But I knew I finally adapted to the language when I found the words "thanks a million" (or "thanks a mil") and "bye bye bye … bye bye bye bye" after any phone call slipping off my tongue. Although it's been an adjustment, unpredictability is what makes Ireland feel like things are still run by people, not by algorithms and advancement. But my alcohol consumption has definitely increased since living in Ireland because socializing here often happens exclusively at the pub.

A dead 60-foot fin whale washed up on a shore in Ireland on Sunday. Experts near the dead whale, whose body washed on the beach on Sunday, noted that they heard "bubbling" when trying to cut into the whale to perform an animal autopsy. The IWDG later deemed the whale "not suitable for post-mortem examination" and abandoned it, according to a post on their site. According to the release, the Kerry city council intends to let the dead whale remain on site as it decomposes. Bloated, dead whales aren't uncommon though they can produce an unpleasant smell when they do happen.
